Title Magnetic fields and kinematics of L1157

Abstract Filamentary structures in dark clouds are preferential sites of star formation. The high density, cold regions evolve through different stages to eventually become stars. To address the relative role played by magnetic field and turbulence in the evolution process, the L1157 dark cloud has been studied using optical polarimetry and molecular line observations. The polarized absorption of background starlight seen through the cloud is used to trace the projected magnetic field geometry of the clouds. In this talk, I will briefly talk about the relationship between the magnetic field geometry, the outflow orientation and the cloud morphology. In addition to that, the dynamical nature of the cloud will also be discussed using molecular line data.
